Introduction:
Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) is a decapeptide (Fig. 1) produced in the hypothalamus. It is also known as luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH), gonadoliberin, luliberin, gonadorelin, and GnRH I. Despite various functions reported for GnRH in mammals, biochemical, molecular, neuroanatomical, pharmacological, and physiological studies have mainly focused on its role as a gonadotropin-releasing factor (Sealfon et al., 1997). In human, the reproductive system is regulated by a process that requires the action of hormones in the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal (HPG) axis loop. In adult males and females, the hypothalamic pulsatile secretion of the GnRH results in the expression and release of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) from the anterior pituitary gland. FSH and LH (gonadotropins) regulate the function of the testes and ovaries (gonads). In both sexes, FSH stimulates gamete production, and LH stimulates the expression of steroid hormones by the gonads. An increased level of steroid hormones inhibits GnRH production through a negative feedback loop.
